FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA
FISHERIES
The 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the FSM covers a sea area
of more than 3 million square kilometers (1.3 million
square miles). The most important fish resources in
the FSM are tuna. Hundreds of thousands of tuna are
harvested within the FSM annually.

The tuna fishery can be divided into two major groups:
- purse seine fishery- which targets its
operations at surface schooling fish such as
Skipjack and small Yellow-fin tuna.
- long-line fishery - which targets its
operations at deep-water species such as
Yellow-fin and Big-eye tuna.
The FSM government issues licenses to foreign vessels for fishing within
the rich 200 mile EEZ. Presently over hundreds of
purse seiners and long-line vessels are operating in
the area.
The process is complicated of obtaining vessel
licenses and permits is complicated. Often, foreign
fishing companies partner with local a agent. Vessel
entering FSM's ports usually must have a local agent.
Agents arrange for appropriate officials to meet and
clear the vessel - such as customs, quarantine and the
Environmental Protection Agency - as well as provision
of supplies and cash advances.
We can help you with that process. We work with
local agents and are familiar with laws governing FSM
fisheries.
